Director in Pink: Greta Gerwig

Profile Essay

This essay reflects on the work of a notable director who inspired thousands of little girls to “reach for the stars,” breaking down feminism in relation to Barbie and analyzing how the film exposes that theme. It also highlights Gerwig’s other achievements, noting her role as one of the first women directors to contribute to such a major blockbuster. I went through two drafting stages, using peer feedback to strengthen my writing. My goal was to show the true meaning of feminism and how an icon like Gerwig expresses these themes through her work. Barbie has always carried nostalgia, and seeing a talented director channel that nostalgia in a way that empowers women is inspiring. I used quotes from Gerwig that translate into feminist ideas, though the topic was challenging to write about. I wish I had focused on a more specific perspective, which might have elevated the essay even further.
